I am often asked business questions so today I thought I would share my experience with running my own business—what I have learned and what 4 “programs” have allowed me to successfully work from home.  I might add that endless hours, passion and dedication are also involved!

Let’s back up a few years—I married my wonderful husband straight out of college, something I never would have imagined but God truly had better plans.  As my husband is in the Navy, I knew we would be moving a lot! Thankfully, I am able to work wherever the husband, computer and hot coffee are available and I am so thankful for that flexibility!

Owning your own business is not easy—completely worth it, but I don’t want to sugar-coat things!  But hey, it does involve creating your own hours, cute coffee shops and yoga pants, so winning!

Yes, you may have a passion, but turning that passion into ways that you both can help and encourage others, while at the same time getting paid is easier said than done!

If you are a military spouse like me, a stay at home mom or just someone who wants the flexibility and benefits that comes with working from “home” here are my 4 suggestions for you!

Personal Note: I will add that I was skeptical to “join” each of these 4 programs, but thankfully I had other women mentor and encourage me and I want to be able to do that for you! Never in a million years would I have thought life would have me as a nutritionist and working from home, but I am so thankful for it all now!

1.) Become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner like me!

Through my Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, I knew I wanted to do something in the field of nutrition, encouraging others that healthy living is truly worth it, so immediately after college and while planning a wedding, I jumped right into the Nutritional Therapy Association’s NTP training program.  I didn’t know much about the program, but I knew I wanted to know more about the science behind nutrition.  Yes, I know eating butter is good for me, but why? I wanted to be able to explain my food beliefs to others.

Becoming a NTP was one of the best decisions of my life!  I look back now and realize I was probably crazy jumping into schooling while getting married, moving, saying good bye to my husband for a very long deployment and working full-time.  But I persevered and am so thankful!

Having the NTP training not only puts credentials and legitimacy behind your name, but it opens up SO many doors!  It lead me to starting my blog, writing my cookbook, All American Paleo Table, creating my weekly podcast, and most importantly given me a platform to share my story and empower others towards health.

Why I love the Nutritional Therapy Association’s NTP program:

  • You will learn and understand the science behind nutrition—how the body works, underlying causes of conditions and diseases,
  • You will learn not only why food is so important to our health, but also lifestyle factors like stress, emotions, hormones, exercise, sunshine and relationships play a huge role in our daily health.
  • You will help not only your own health, but your spouse, children, friends, clients or other loved ones!
  • You will learn basic client interview, business and legal practices to make your business thrive.
  • You will become apart of a passionate group of like minded individuals who will not only become colleagues, but also great friends!

Truly your eyes will be opened—you will have endless “ahh-ha” moments and that to me is one of the best parts of the training!

If you want to learn more about the NTP training visit nutritionaltherapy.com and be sure to mention “Colorful Eats” when you register!

3.) Essential Oils

This last one was the hardest for me to commit to, but I am SO thankful I have a fabulous mentor who just kept encouraging me to do so.

Why? Because you can share your passion of health and nutrition in a way that truly helps others and has lasting effects.  Essential oils truly work, I could go on and on from personal experience, but it also is a way that you can empower others to take control of their health, beyond just a food standpoint, which lets be honest, not every one wants to change their diet and that is ok!

If you want to learn more either using essential oils and why they might be beneficial for YOU or to join my team, just send me an email.

4.) Blogging

Wow, this could be a post in and of itself!  Calling yourself a “blogger” seems so glamorous, and it is very fun, I absolutely love it, but it is far less glamorous when you are on my side of the computer.  It is a GREAT way to express your creativity and share with others!

Blogging opened up the door for me to write my cookbook, All American Paleo Table, something at the age of 25 I would have never dreamed of!

  • Investing in photography equipment is key—I talk all about that in my photograph ebook, Scrumptious & Styled.
  • Sign up for affiliate programs like Amazon!
  • Write an ebook! You can find all of mine HERE.
  • Keep putting yourself out there and don’t be afraid to do it—you all, putting yourself and your life on the internet is hard! But I LOVE sharing my life with you all and am always so thankful when I get feedback from you all!

In the words of Dory from Finding Nemo…”Just keep swimming, just keep swimming”…stay after it, find ways to work from home and truly love what you do and I promise you it will pay off!

You are truly an inspiration to me if not to lots of other people Caroline. God bless and multiply you in your businesses. This is the first time I’ve commented before, but felt led to encourage you that you’ve encouraged me! I was also been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 18; 7 years ago. I’m currently giving essential oils a try because of your slide show video you made a few months ago. And I love seeing your beautiful yummy creations! You make it all lol so easy, but I know you are working hard. Just keep swimming girl! Thank you!!
