How CBD oil can help during seasons of stress

I think we can all agree that the past few months have been a doozy. No way to sugar coat it. The fear and interruption caused by a global pandemic has greatly affected our health in ways we might not even fully see yet. The fear is real, yes, but the effects of stress long term are even more real!

And coronavirus or not, seasons of stress do come!

Personally, I’ve been committed to turning off my phone by 8pm, only checking the news every few days or hearing snapshots from my husband and making sleep a top priority above all else! I know many of you, like me, are learning to “juggle all the things” and this certainly has affected me both mentally and physically. 

BUT, this worldwide pandemic has made me more aware of stress than ever before! 

CBD oil can be one particularly helpful tool in navigating stressful seasons and creating a sense of calm in your life.

Let’s dive into the science of how this all works. 

Impact of CBD on chronic stress and cortisol

Our bodies were designed for short intense periods of stress—fun fact, in nutrition school you learn about stress as “running from a tiger” something most of us aren’t doing today, but you get the picture—short and intense! 

Problem is, in modern times, stress is constant. We sit in traffic, deal with a constant barrage of environmental toxins, radiation and cell waves, stressful emails right from the start of the day, often eating on the run and going from meeting to event to to-do list. 

When our bodies are in a constant state of stress, stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol rise to meet that incoming stress. 

Calming your central nervous system (think yoga, meditation, sleep, breath work) is key to calming this stress response. This is where CBD and your endocannabinoid system comes in the picture.

Stress and the endocannabinoid system

Our bodies naturally produce endocannabinoids, but chronic stress can deplete endocannabinoids creating an imbalance in the body’s equilibrium.

The endocannabinoid system (like other systems) have receptors and enzymes to turn “on” and “off” reactions. With chronic stress, the receptors “on and off switch” is confused leading to symptoms like anxiety, mood imbalances, feeling overwhelmed pain and sleeplessness.

CBD oil binds to the receptors and mimics our natural cannabinoids thus restoring balance and encouraging the endocannabinoid system to function again on its own.

Women actually make more cannabinoids than men (we also loose more through our cycles and breastfeeding), which is one reason why CBD helps hormonal regulation so much!

Impact of dietary fats on stress and CBD

You all know I love my butter and healthy fats, but there actually is science supporting how essential fatty acids can help combat stress, anxiety and cortisol levels.

Cholesterol is a building block for the steroid hormones which include cortisol! Adequate cholesterol is necessary for optimal steroid hormone production—yes, dietary fats are a stress superfood!

Omega 3 fatty acids in particular can play a huge role in boosting our mental health and regulating mood. Omega 3s such as fresh fish and fish oil, walnuts, pastured egg yolks, grass-fed dairy, flaxseed and chia seeds are anti-inflammatory too! 

An increase in stress directly increases inflammation which is just one reason why dietary fats and CBD can help calm inflammation!

In a University of Minnesota study on the effects of CBD and epilepsy, they found that diets higher in fat increase CBD’s absorption. The study also found that when compared to fasting, taking CBD with food increased the amount of CBD found in the body by 4+ times.

So take your CBD with a piece of gluten free toast and butter, slice of cheese or some nuts!

How quick does CBD take effect?

Obviously this is going to differ person to person but here are some general guidelines.

Daily Drops: It’s best to take these drops under the tongue and hold for 30 seconds-1 minute—this way the CBD is absorbed sublingually straight into your blood stream. It should take 10-30 minutes to reach peak effect and will continue providing peak benefits for 4-8 hours. I take these at night to help with sleep (typically 1 hour before desired sleep time), but many people who deal with anxiety find it best to take with breakfast.

Daily Gels: These slow release capsules absorb more slowly, about 1-2 hours, since they have to pass through the digestive system, but continue providing benefits for a long time, about 5-12 hours! I take these in the morning with breakfast to help increase the absorption!

*Since CBD is better absorbed with a bit of fat, I typically take my nightly drops after my nighttime snack (a handful of nuts, scoop of nut butter or whole milk yogurt). A nighttime snack can not only help CBD absorption but also keep your blood sugar stable throughout the night.

Relief Cream: This topical cream is going to offer the quickest support which is why it’s so beneficial for pain, headaches/migraines, cramps, sore muscles and many of you tell me arthritis too! Even just opening the jar and taking a whiff can be so calming! It is fairly potent—you only need a pea sized amount—and it should take effect quickly in 10-20 minutes, lasting several hours.

Depending on your need, you might benefit from one or all of these CBD oil forms—I know I certainly use (and love) all three!

Why it’s best to take CBD daily

You can certainly up your CBD dosage during days or seasons of high intensity stress or anxiety, or to help with acute pain like headaches or PMS symptoms.
