You are what you eat—yes, yes all true, but what you put ONTO your body is just as important as what you put INTO your body!
As someone with an auto-immune disease, I have been working really hard recently to not put as much strain on my body, particularly my liver. I have been slowly changing out all my household cleaners, skin products, switching up the occasional afternoon cup of coffee to decaf, using essential oils and taking huge steps to eliminate stress. Want to know something great?! I can truly see all of this playing a huge difference in my day to day health and energy!
Recently I have been sharing more lifestyle tips because I truly believe that is such an important aspect of our overall health and I have just loved hearing responses from you all at how you have enjoyed these topics!
Your skin is your largest organ and crazy fact is that whatever you put onto your skin goes directly into your blood stream, even faster than the food you eat as that takes time to digest. So many problems we are seeing today like infertility, hormone dis-regulation, metabolic issues and weight gain, attention difficulties and SO many more can be issues that arise with exposure to toxins. There is no way we can avoid all the toxins unless we move to a farm in Switzerland, which I would be totally down with, but we can take some very simple steps to protect ourselves each day!
I am here to tell you, taking small steps to change up my skincare routine, laundry soap, and cleaning products has been the biggest game changer for me this past year! It is actually kind of fun to be able to see how this makes a difference each and everyday, because I am such a visual person!
So, what is activated charcoal?
Activated charcoal is a highly porous and absorbent natural substance that quite literally binds to toxins and chemicals in the body, allowing them to be flushed out by the body’s natural detoxification processes.
Thats a mouthful Caroline…yes, I know! So in simple terms, activated charcoal is not what you use to grill your steak but it pretty much is a sponge that soaks up the bad stuff!
Many doctors, poison controls or emergency situations use activated charcoal as a quick emergency toxin removal if something is ingested, as well as with alcohol or drug overdose.
I have even been drinking activated charcoal recently and even created a fun Charcoal Honey Lavender Lemonade recipe for you all!
My personal favorite activated charcoal products
The type of charcoal products you use is SO important because in the wrong ratios or amounts activated charcoal can be very dehydrating!
I only ever share my tried and true favorites 🙂
Charcoal Cleansing Bar: My go to face wash each day! It is quick, easy and I LOVE the way my face feels afterwards! So silky smooth! I have noticed that my pores are smaller, those annoying blackheads are gone and that annoying junk that you want to sometimes squeeze out of your skin disappears! This bar lasts a long time, so it is well worth it! When I travel, I wrap it in wax/parchment paper after it is completely dry and it travels just perfectly!
Please note: as with any changes in diet or skincare products you may have a slight reaction, plus charcoal is brining the “junk” to the surface so you may notice a few days of minor breakouts.

Purifying Charcoal Mask: I use this mask about once a week, usually just in my blackhead prone areas like forehead, nose and chin. It is more on the expensive side, but a little goes a long way, so I know I love this because it is all ready for your use, no disastrous black clouds of charcoal smoke or messes in your bathroom. Trust me I am all about ease of use!
Think of this like giving yourself a mini spa treatment, in the comforts of your own home! If you were to go to the spa you would pay $100 for something like this, so keeping a tube handy is well worth it! I generally use this once a week and leave it on for 10 minutes, keep in mind it does dry quickly!

How to Nourish Your Skin After Using Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is potent and can be dehydrating—so it is important to both nourish your skin from the inside as well as the outside! Be sure to drink plenty of water and eat lots of good quality fats (grass-fed butter, coconut oil, avocados, olive oil, duck fat…etc) as well as nourish your skin topically!
Want to know a fact that changed my skin-care thoughts forever?
So often, myself included, we want to get all the oil off our skin and dry it out…NO! I seriously wish someone had explained this to me sooner, so I am sharing with you all! Our skin produces natural oils no matter what we do to prevent that and actually drying out our skin with harsh chemicals and oil free soaps causes our skin to produce more oils than necessary and clog our pores…hello breakouts!
So hydrating your skin daily with good quality facial oils is SO important!
My favorite moisturizers:
- Primally Pure Complexion Mist (I love both scents!)
- Primally Pure Fancy Face Serum
- Beautycounter’s Lustro Face Oil #1
- Beautycounter’s Rejuvenating Eye Cream
My Daily Skincare Routine
- In the mornings after I workout I cleanse with the charcoal cleansing bar.
- Then I spritz with Primally Pure’s Complexion Mist and use a small amount of Lustro Face Oil on my nose and cheek areas. I usually allow this to soak in for a minimum of 15 minutes before applying any makeup, but many days I never actually wear makeup!
- At night I rinse my face with a lot of warm water first and then the charcoal cleaning bar again.
- I again spritz with Primally Pure’s Complexion Mist followed by the Fancy Face Serum (I could go on and on about my love for that serum!).
- At night, I follow up with this Rejuvenating Eye Cream—yes, I am 25 and using eye cream and have been amazed at the results! We all deal with puffy eyes and I have noticed quite the refreshing feeling in the morning with this cream!
- I also HIGHLY recommend incorporating 1 tablespoon of grass-fed collagen peptides into your daily routine (I add mine to coffee & it is tasteless) as I have notice this make a huge difference in my hair, skin and muscular health.
