Can we just all admit the wonders of modern life? Dry shampoo might just be at the top of my list, especially since becoming a mom!

When Remington was born, I was actually in the hospital for 6 days and let’s just say my dry shampoo bottle was a lifesaver!

Dry shampoo has become a staple in my bathroom and I’m sure yours too! It allows you to extend time between washes and is a miracle worker on days when 5 minutes is all you have—dry shampoo and top bun it is! If you are anything like me and don’t have time to wash your hair daily (yes, I shower, don’t worry!) or don’t want to damage your hair with daily washing and styling, dry shampoo can come in handy!

BUT…and you know I’m going there…not all dry shampoos are safe for you, your hormones or the environment!

What to avoid and why

Fragrance: Always the top of my no-no list. A company’s fragrance is their trade secret. So they can loop thousands of harmful chemicals and toxins under “fragrance” without having to disclose the true ingredients.  Scary right? Fragrances are a top endocrine disruptor and allergen too. Also, keep in mind that whatever you put on your hair, you breathe all day and night!

Liquified Petroleum Gas: *Most* dry shampoos on the market are aerosol sprays. How does this work? Aerosol uses a colorless and odorless chemical propellant that sprays the dry shampoo out of the can and onto your hair. Liquified petroleum gas is made up of butane and propane and always comes with a warning—extremely flammable!

I don’t know about you but spraying something on my body and around my face that is extremely flammable just doesn’t sound right.

These gases are also harmful to the environment and can damage the ozone layer that protects us against the sun’s harmful rays as well as damage the delicate ocean ecosystem. Hawaii and Florida ban aerosol sunscreen for this reason, yet we still spray it on our face and hair!

Typically when you use dry shampoo you are spraying in a compact area such as a bathroom with not much open ventilation. This has potential to do more harm by breathing in these gasses.

Alcohol: This ingredient can be incredibly drying to the hair follicles and strands, especially with repeated use. Alcohol serves a purpose to draw out moisture, oil and grime but there are much safer ingredients to do that!

^^ These ingredients can have long term damaging effects to our hormones as well as create issues like migraines, headaches, allergies and sensitivities, skin irritation, liver congestion and respiratory issues! That’s a big price to pay in my opinion.

A safer dry shampoo solution

I’ve been using Primally Pure’s dry shampoo for years now and absolutely love it! Not only does it work but it also volumizes and lifts your hair in all the best ways!

I have to admit I was skeptical of dry shampoo at first. Would it work? How would it feel? Well..safe to say, Primally Pure’s dry shampoo has blown me away with results!!

Here’s the details on these powerhouse ingredients:

  • Kaolin clay and arrowroot powder: absorbs oil and grime
  • Grapefruit essential oil: has natural cleansing and purifying properties
  • Peppermint essential oil: simulates hair growth and freshens up your hair
  • Cocoa powder: this is only in the “dark locks” version and it naturally colors darker strands so your hair doesn’t look white or grey. It doesn’t make a mess or stain your clothes, just wash your hands after applying!

Does dry shampoo actually clean your hair?

Short answer, NO. You still need to wash your hair to clarify and rid your hair of scalp oils, bacteria and dirt. There is a fine line between washing too often and not washing enough—washing too much can dry out your hair and overproduce oils but not washing can lead to dandruff and bacteria build up.

Pro tip: when you do wash your hair make sure you cleanse thoroughly. Depending on your hair type, you may need to double wash—this is what I do to make sure both my hair and scalp are very clean! Really take the time to scrub so you can extend time in between washes.

I personally LOVE Beautycounter’s Daily Shampoo and Conditioner—I’ve tried just about every brand of ‘clean’ shampoo and these both actually work. You will love the way it lathers and how your hair feels silky soft and clean! This shampoo and conditioner combo has been a secret to extending my wash cycle!

How to make the most of your dry shampoo

I’ve found a few secrets that really help your hair feel and look fabulous…with minimal effort!

*Do this before washing your face and starting your morning skincare routine, that way you can rinse off any excess dry shampoo that got on your face (not usually an issue though).

  1. Brush the top crown of your hair to smooth out any frizzy spots.
  2. Shake the dry shampoo along your part line, forehead line, sides by your ears and any greasy spots.
  3. Use your fingers to massage the dry shampoo into your roots.
  4. If time allows, let it settle for a few minutes while you wash your face.
  5. Take a blow dryer and/or hair straightener and touch up your style.

See how easy that is? It seriously only takes a few minutes!
